English as an International Language

Posted by admin | E-Learning, Learning English | Wednesday 8 July 2009 9:29 pm

The status of English as an international language is long established and, for the foreseeable future, unlikely to be greatly challenged. However, I believe that to make it genuinely international, then one step in that direction could be to consider the influence of non-native speakers in a different light.

An English Summer

This growing season has been a good one in this part of north-west England. Lots of sunny dry weather, but also regular supplies of rain, luckily just when needed. June was a complete “washout”, it never stopped raining, July and August on the other hand had lots of very hot days and plenty of sunshine to make gardening a real treat.

In early spring, hellebores and daphnes held centre stage. Hellebore.orientalis with flowers ranging from butter yellow through to deep maroon, H. niger did not flower so well this year, but well enough to appreciate a few of those gorgeous white, golden centered blooms. These early spring plants always raise my spirit just at the right time, after all those long dark dreary of winter, you feel things are finally on the move.

    Brewster Back to England

William Brewster and the Pilgrims found religious freedom in Holland but it was very difficult to live and work in a land where English was not the major language spoken. So after many serious discussions the Pilgrims decided to migrate to the New World. There they and their children could speak English and continue to enjoy their religious freedom.

    Brewster and Puritans Establish Church

William Brewster, born in 1567 in England, as an adult became a Puritan. The beliefs and views of the Puritans did not conform to those of the Church of England, creating a dangerous situation for those Englishmen and women who called themselves Puritans. In his village of Scrooby in Nottinghamshire, Brewster and others formed their own church, called a Separatist church. Secretly this group met for devotions in the Brewster manor house. But even from within the privacy of the Brewster home the group was spied upon, found out, and persecuted.

English King Grants Charter in New World

Jamestown, founded on May 14, 1607, was the first permanent English colony established in America. It was located on a peninsula of the James River in the present-day state of Virginia. It was named for King James I of England and here the first American representative government was established. One year before Jamestown was founded the King of England granted a charter to the Virginia Company of London. This charter gave the company the right to settle, explore and govern limited parts of the New World. And so it began when, on December 20, 1606, a group of some 100 men, including Captain John Smith and commanded by Captain Christopher Newport, sailed away from a port near London, beginning an adventure to the New World.

    Part One:

Anyone looking to make money quickly can do so in a reasonable amount of time teaching ESL abroad. In Asia and the Middle East, accommodations are often provided leaving you with only the utilities left to pay each month. In Europe, the standard of living is quite cost effective as essentials and food are often more affordable than one might expect.
